Richard M. Mizelle Jr.

Richard McKinley Mizelle Jr. is associate professor of History at the University of Houston. His research interests include the history of race and medicine, public health, disaster politics, and medical technology in the United States. He is the author of Backwater Blues: The Mississippi Flood of 1927 in the African American Imagination (2014) and co-author of Resilience and Opportunity: Lessons from the U.S. Gulf Coast after Katrina and Rita (2011). He is currently working on a history of race and diabetes in the 20th century. His articles and essays have appeared in the Journal of African American History, American Historian Magazine, Open Rivers Journal, ISIS Journal, and the History Compass. His work has also been quoted in The New York Times and New Yorker Magazine.
