John H. Arnold

John H. Arnold worked for many years at Birkbeck, University of  London, and in 2016 took up the chair of medieval history at the University of Cambridge. He has written on various aspects of medieval culture and society, with a particular focus on popular religion and medieval heresy. His books include History: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2000), Belief and Unbelief in Medieval Europe (Bloomsbury, 2005), and the Oxford Handbook of Medieval Christianity (Oxford University Press, 2014). His most recent publication is the second edition of What is Medieval History? (Polity, 2021), and he is currently working on a major study of lay religion in southern France before the Black Death.
