George Toles is Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Manitoba. He is known for his longstanding artistic collaboration with Winnipeg auteur Guy Maddin, having co-written the screenplays for a number of Maddin’s most celebrated features, including Keyhole (2011), Brand Upon the Brain (2006), Twilight of the Ice Nymphs (1997), Careful (1992), and The Saddest Music in the World (2004). He also wrote the original story and co-wrote the screenplay for Neil Burns’s Edison and Leo (2008), Canada’s first feature-length stop-animation film. In addition to his creative work, Professor Toles is the author of A House Made of Light: Essays on the Arts of Film.
